What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

You may well have heard quite a lot about Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in the newspapers, on television or on the radio. CBT has become internationally recognised as an extremely effective technique for a number of difficulties including depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, chronic pain and stress, amongst others. CBT is a talking therapy which is usually offered as a 1:1 intervention but can also be effective as a group therapy.  It is a well-researched evidence based treatment. The basic  priniciples of CBT is that our thoughts can effect how we feel emotionally and physically and can also alter what we choose to do in our lives. Sometimes, thoughts can become more extreme and unhelpful. This can worsen how the person feels and causes them to act in ways that keep their distress going.  CBT helps people understand this process.  A Cognitive Behavioural Therapist works with people to find strategies, techniques or processes that will enable the person to achieve important personal goals and ultimately live their lives in a more meaningful way.

All our therapists are highly experienced and accredited with the BABCP and also hold a postgraduate qualification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The therapist aims to work with the patient to help them begin to identify and then change their extreme thinking and unhelpful behaviour. By doing this, the result can be a significant improvement in how the person feels and lives their day-to-day life.

What is the difference between CBT and counselling?

A Cognitive Behavioural Therapist aims to help a person by equipping them with the skills  and knowledge they need to reduce or eliminate their symptoms and lead a more fulfilling life. In counselling patients are encouraged to talk about their problems this can really help but sometimes just talking does not sort out the problem.

How much will it cost?
An initial assessment will cost £45.00.  The assessment will take approximately one hour.  Subsequent appointments will last 1/2 hr or an hour and will cost £25.00 or £45.00 respectively.
